The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) has launched a new re-entry permit for expats who have stayed outside the UAE for more than six months. This permit enables them to return to the country without their residency visas being automatically cancelled. The service has been widely used by travel agents since its launch.
Typically, if expat residents stay outside the UAE for over 180 consecutive days, their residency visas are cancelled automatically. However, with the new service, these residents can apply for an entry permit to return to the UAE. This has helped primary visa holders and their families to resume their lives in the country on the same residency.
The total cost of the service varies depending on the duration of stay outside the country. A fine of Dh100 is charged for every 30 days or less spent outside the UAE, in addition to an ICP fee of approximately Dh150. Service providers may charge their own additional fees.
To get the re-entry permit application approved, expat residents need to provide valid reasons for staying outside the country and submit proof of the same. While the ICP has not specified the exact set of valid reasons, travel agents have said that medical reasons, humanitarian cases, and work-related issues are considered.
Applicants must submit copies of their Emirates ID and passport and specify the reason for their stay outside the UAE when applying for the permit. The application must be submitted from outside the UAE, and once approved, the applicant must enter the UAE within 30 days.
However, not all categories of residents need to apply for the re-entry permit. For instance, Golden Visa holders can stay outside the country for as long as they need without affecting their residency.
